Abstract:
This industrial doctorate research addresses the complexity of real-life systems, such as logistics and supply chains, by bridging the gap between mathematical models and real applications. Traditional models often oversimplify complex systems, but recent advancements in data processing technology have led to the development of ""smart"" algorithms, enhancing system efficiency. The research proposes ""sim-learn-heuristics"", a novel method combining heuristics, simulation, and learning mechanisms to improve system behavior. It outlines a step-by-step methodology, covering the development, validation, and integration of algorithms with simulations, and highlights the use of simheuristics for solving complex problems. Additionally, the research promotes collaboration between academia and industry, particularly through partnerships with companies like Spindox in the logistics and transportation sectors. The thesis has resulted in several published papers and has opened up new avenues for collaboration between operations research and artificial intelligence, expanding future applications in these fields.
