Summary
This presentation analyses the role of translation programs in Argentina, Colombia, Chile, and Uruguay, focusing on their reach and limitations within the global translation landscape. By examining the institutional structures, objectives, and operational dynamics of these programs, as well as the allocation and destinations of their subsidies, we aim to understand their impact on enhancing the international visibility of national literatures. A comparative perspective on the internationalization of these national publishing markets, as presented here, is particularly relevant both analytically and politically, given their dual peripheral status: they are situated on the periphery not only within the global translation system but also within the cultural geography of the Spanish language. Ultimately, this analysis seeks to evaluate the capacity of these programs to foster cultural exchange and editorial internationalization.
Alejandro Dujovne
Ph.D. in Social Sciences and researcher at both CONICET and the IDAES School of the National University of San Martín. He serves as the Director of the Center for Studies and Public Policies of the Book at the same university. He has participated in various national and international research projects on the production and international circulation of books and ideas, publishing in Latin America, university presses, translation, and book fairs. His works include A History of the Jewish Book: Argentine Jewish Culture Through Its Publishers, Booksellers, Translators, Printers, and Libraries (Ed. Siglo XXI, 2014), Policies and Strategies of Publishing Internationalization in Latin America (CERLALC-UNESCO, 2020), and The Book Ecosystem in Ibero-America: A Market Overview (CERLALC-UNESCO, 2022).
