The Universitat Oberta de Catalunya took part in the International Open Access Week organised by the Scholarly Publishing and Academic Resources Coalition (SPARC), the aim of which was to raise awareness within the scientific community of the advantages of publishing in open access.

In 2011, the UOC joined the initiative and prepared extensive information about open access and open education resources (OER), two on-site training workshops and one virtual one, as well as a talks on the subject. An information point was opened in the UOC Wikilounge and open materials were made available and audiovisual materials screened.
