Summary

Smart cities around the world have created projects that aimed for the inclusion of children, reportedly supporting and encouraging children’s participation. Areas of reported participation include urban planning, education, mobility, among many others. This presentation will problematize the stages of current children’s participatory processes in Smart cities, discussing also the ethical challenges. Further, a case study from Stavanger is presented.

Johana M. Castilla

Social scientist, educator and doctoral research fellow at the University of Stavanger. Her PhD work explores children participation and learning experiences in Smart and sustainable cities. Johana has recently finished a research stay at the University of Oxford, where she continued her research on digital and social change and on childhood and sustainability in Smart cities. She has published in the fields of social science, technology, and education.

Her research interests include Early childhood, education for sustainability, citizen participation, digital and social change, Smart cities, inequality, urban planning, food security and societal security.
