El Género en disputa: el feminismo y la subversión de la identidad

Judith Butler

abstract

Gender Trouble, the work on which so-called queer theory is based and the emblem of gender studies as we know them today, is vital for understanding current feminist theory. It is a lucid critique of the essentialist idea that gender identity is immutable and rooted in nature, in the body or in a standardised, compulsory heterosexuality. It is an interdisciplinary work that involves philosophy, anthropology, literary theory and psychoanalysis. It is indebted to the author's longstanding links to feminist theory, to the debates on socially constructed character, to psychoanalysis, to the pioneering work on transvestism and to her active participation in movements defending sexual diversity. Thus, with one eye on academia and the other on militancy and supported by her reading of authors such as Jacques Lacan, Sigmund Freud, Simone de Beauvoir, Claude Lévi-Strauss, Luce Irigaray, Julia Kristeva, Monique Wittig or Michel Foucault, Butler offers an original, controversial and certainly subversive theory which has led to more than a little trouble itself.
