Tourism, culture and regeneration

Melanie K. Smith (ed.)

abstract

The phenomenon of urban regeneration has become increasingly prominent on government agendas in recent years. Many academics and practitioners in this field believe that cultural considerations should be central to the regeneration process, as without such considerations it is impossible to achieve sustainable and integrated regeneration. The extent to which this perspective is valid is explored for the first time in this book. Also considered, using a blend of theory and practice, is the role of tourism and its relationship to cultural regeneration. The text is enhanced by case studies taken from North and South America as well as Europe (including the UK). This text has been written especially for students studying leisure and tourism, urban planning and cultural geography.
