abstract

First looking at uses and then examining the design of objects and urban development: this is the approach adopted by all the collaborators in this work. They question the extensions and changes in the use of ordinary objects in both the home and in public spaces, as well as their ability to compensate for the limitations of human mobility.


There is a fascination for technical progress despite the disappointment felt by some users. Several of the processes presented here allow us to understand how some constructions, which either aim to provide universal access or adaptations to certain types of disability, are widespread, whilst others are not very well-known and rarely used. These results establish a scientific posture and also outline a form of advocacy.


If developers and city planning policy officers ensure that they take into account how people use things, and do so at the same time as and not after they design techniques, this will serve to reinforce the continuity of links between conception and use. This is true for both home improvements and communication devices (audiovisual, telecommunications) as well as public transport (bus, metro), which are all examined in this work.
